Writer, director, and actor George Zouvelos celebrates the red, white, and blue as a proud Greek American long before he became a filmmaker

You may know George Zouvelos from the Greek American community in the United States, as president of the AHEPA Hermes John Cassavetes Chapter 186 in Astoria, New York, or as an award winning independent filmmaker, writer, director, and actor whose feature film, Once a Week For Life, #OWFL, will be available beginning April 14 on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, DISH Network, DirecTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and through cable pay per view for rent or purchase. But one of his proudest achievements, besides being a father of four, began around 1995, when he initiated a movement that continues to celebrate liberty and freedom from oppression for Hellenes around the world.
George Zouvelos said, “When I first mentioned the idea to community leaders, they told me I was crazy and said they could never raise that much money to have the building lit in blue and white. But anyone who knows me knows that just because others fail does not mean I lack the tenacity to complete what I start. I always complete what I start and what I put my name on, or I will not do it at all.”
He approached owner Leona Helmsley, who reluctantly agreed to speak with him, and convinced her to light the towers of the Empire State Building in blue and white in honor of Greek independence after more than 400 years of Ottoman oppression, terror, and persecution in Greece and across the Balkans. The Hellenes, or Greeks, were among the first to rise in revolt against the Turks, and their struggle helped accelerate the dismantling of Ottoman Turkish rule, inspiring other nations that had been held in its iron grip for centuries, from the Balkans to the Caucasus. She agreed to do so, and he also persuaded her not to charge for the service, as is often done with corporations.
At the time, whether he knew it or not, George Zouvelos initiated a movement commemorating Greek Independence Day that slowly helped spark a global tradition. Today, iconic landmarks around the world illuminate their structures in blue and white each year to celebrate the occasion, serving as a radiant testament to the enduring reach and spirit of the Greek diaspora worldwide.
George Zouvelos said, “I wanted to start a tradition so that the world could visually see that Hellenism is a culture with contributions and ideals that have influenced and spread worldwide from the financial capital of the world, and we are screaming it loud and proud. Once the Empire State Building was lit, I also had the Unisphere at the site of the 1964 to 1965 New York World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Park glowing in blue as well.”
His phrase has always been, “Ζήτω ο Ελληνισμός παντού,” and today, with proud Hellenes across the diaspora compelling world powers and the businesses that control buildings and monuments to light them in blue and white for Greek Independence Day, it surely looks and feels that way.

Ένα από τα πιο περήφανα επιτεύγματά του, πέρα από το ότι είναι πατέρας τεσσάρων παιδιών, ξεκίνησε περίπου το 1995, όταν πρωτοστάτησε σε ένα κίνημα που συνεχίζει μέχρι σήμερα να γιορτάζει την ελευθερία και την απελευθέρωση από την καταπίεση για τους Έλληνες σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Ο Γιώργος Ζούβελος δήλωσε: «Όταν πρότεινα την ιδέα στους ηγέτες της κοινότητας, μου είπαν ότι ήμουν τρελός και ότι ποτέ δεν θα μπορούσαν να μαζέψουν τόσα χρήματα για να φωταγωγηθεί το κτίριο στα μπλε και λευκά. Όμως όποιος με ξέρει ξέρει ότι το γεγονός πως οι άλλοι αποτυγχάνουν δεν σημαίνει ότι μου λείπει η αποφασιστικότητα να ολοκληρώσω ό,τι ξεκινάω. Πάντα ολοκληρώνω ό,τι ξεκινώ και βάζω το όνομά μου πάνω του, αλλιώς δεν το κάνω καθόλου.»
Πλησίασε την ιδιοκτήτρια Leona Helmsley, η οποία με δισταγμό δέχτηκε να τον ακούσει, και την έπεισε να φωταγωγήσει τους πύργους του Empire State Building στα μπλε και λευκά προς τιμήν της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας, μετά από περισσότερα από 400 χρόνια οθωμανικής καταπίεσης, τρόμου και διώξεων στην Ελλάδα και τα Βαλκάνια. Οι Έλληνες ήταν από τους πρώτους που επαναστάτησαν κατά των Τούρκων, και ο αγώνας τους συνέβαλε στην επιτάχυνση της διάλυσης της Οθωμανικής κυριαρχίας, εμπνέοντας και άλλες χώρες που είχαν ζήσει υπό σιδηρά κυριαρχία για αιώνες, από τα Βαλκάνια μέχρι τον Καύκασο. Η Helmsley συμφώνησε και, μάλιστα, τον άφησε να το κάνει χωρίς χρέωση, όπως συνήθως συμβαίνει με εταιρικές χορηγίες.
Τότε, είτε το ήξερε είτε όχι, ο Γιώργος Ζούβελος ξεκίνησε ένα κίνημα για την επέτειο της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας που σιγά-σιγά έγινε παγκόσμια παράδοση. Σήμερα, εμβληματικά ορόσημα σε όλο τον κόσμο φωταγωγούνται στα μπλε και λευκά κάθε χρόνο για να γιορτάσουν την επέτειο, αποτελώντας μια ζωντανή απόδειξη της διαρκούς επιρροής και του πνεύματος της Ελληνικής Διασποράς παγκοσμίως.
Ο Γιώργος Ζούβελος δήλωσε: «Ήθελα να ξεκινήσω μια παράδοση ώστε ο κόσμος να βλέπει οπτικά ότι ο Ελληνισμός είναι μια κουλτούρα με συνεισφορές και ιδέες που έχουν επηρεάσει και εξαπλωθεί παγκοσμίως από την οικονομική πρωτεύουσα του κόσμου, και το φωνάζουμε δυνατά και περήφανα. Αφού φωταγωγήθηκε το Empire State Building, είχα επίσης και το Unisphere στο χώρο της Παγκόσμιας Έκθεσης της Νέας Υόρκης (1964–1965) να λάμπει μπλε.»
Η φράση του πάντα ήταν:
«Ζήτω ο Ελληνισμός παντού»,
και σήμερα, με περήφανους Έλληνες σε όλο τον κόσμο να πείθουν κυβερνήσεις και επιχειρήσεις που ελέγχουν κτίρια και μνημεία να τα φωτίζουν στα μπλε και λευκά για την Ελληνική Ανεξαρτησία, φαίνεται και νιώθεται ακριβώς έτσι.
